Moving and Handling
In addition to overseeing Moving and Handling issues within Penn Hall, the Outreach Coordinator is also responsible for organising the delivery of training courses to staff in mainstream schools.
There are seven Centaur Key Trainers at Penn Hall all of whom have delivered INSET training to members of our own Penn Hall staff. At least one Moving and Handling course is run once a year for mainstream staff who support pupils with disabilities. A second course is offered if there is sufficient demand.
Basic course content is set out below:
Handling People with Special Needs 1–2 day course
- Musculo-skeletal system
- Spinal awareness and looking after yourself
- Base 2 Face
- Legal Responsibilities
- Assessing Client Needs
- Risk Assessment
- Practical Work
Additionally both Mary Hall and Kim Morgan, members of the Outreach Service Team, are Key Trainers and able to use their experience to advise and guide school staff on any specific Moving and Handling issues or Risk Assessment.
The Outreach Service provided by Penn Hall School is very much based on meeting the needs of individuals in mainstream schools.
Therefore, the issues/barriers/difficulties that have resulted in a referral are specific to that particular child, and are affected by the staff, the setting and the overall school context. Consequently, the levels of support and outcomes vary considerably between each individual and school.
