Pre-Formal Pathway

The pre formal pathway is designed for our learners who have profound and complex learning needs

The pre-formal curriculum has each child and young person’s EHCP at it’s heart. Personalised goals are delivered through a broad and balanced range of high-quality learning opportunities and experiences in four key areas.

My Communication and Interaction – enabling children and young people to establish behaviours through which they can express their feelings, make choices and communicate with other people

Exploring and Understanding my world - enabling children and young people to develop an awareness of the world around them through sensory exploration and responding to stimuli.

My Physical Development - enabling children and young people to develop the physical skills through which they can control and explore their environment

My Personal Development – enabling children and young people to develop self-help skills, to participate in the school community, to respond to other people and share activities and celebrations with them, becoming more confident in the wider world. This strand includes Relationships and Sex Education.

Intensive interaction approaches are an integral part of our work with children and young people in the pre formal pathway. Intensive Interaction is a way of being with a child or young person and is embedded into all of our interactions with a child or young person for whom it is appropriate. Interactions always take a child’s lead and are relaxed and playful. We want all of our children and young people to enjoy communicating, improve their understanding of non-verbal and verbal communications and strengthen emotional connections and bonds with others.

Pupils with profound and complex learning needs learn through consistent routines, sensory experiences and interaction with adults.

The pre formal pathway at Penn Hall School supports children and young people to:

  • Develop a sense of security through building positive relationships

  • Develop an awareness of the world around them through sensory exploration

  • Develop the physical skills through which they can control and explore their environment

  • Establish behaviours through which they can control and explore their environment

  • Establish behaviours through which they can express their feelings, make choices and communicate with other people.

  • Experience life within the school community, responding to other people and sharing activities with them.

Impact

By the time they leave Penn Hall, we aim that the children and young people following the pre formal pathway will be able to:

  • express their wants, needs, likes and dislikes in a way that others can interpret

  • tolerate environments and experiences beyond the most familiar ones

  • have some degree of independence

  • make choices and exert some control over their lives

  • interact confidently with other people

  • explore the world around them

  • be confident when spending time on their own
